Shiatsu Shiatsu originated in China and Japan and has been used to help heal the body and mind for many centuries. Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”. Pressure is applied to points on the body to aid relaxation and well being. These are the same points used in acupuncture. Shiatsu is a non-invasive therapy which treats the body and mind together. Shiatsu involves rebalancing the body’s energy through a system of pathways known as meridians. When our energy is balanced we feel happy, healthy and relaxed. However, the stresses and strains of day to day living often give rise to imbalance which can manifest in many ways such as tension, pain, worry or disease. Shiatsu is usually practised with the receiver lying on a futon at floor level. (If the client cannot lie at floor level the treatment can be adjusted to incorporate a couch or a chair.) With the exception of shoes, jewellery and watches, the recipient remains fully clothed. Improved energy flow through the body is encouraged with a variety of gentle holding techniques and stretches. The treatment should not be painful. |
