What is counselling?
The Mulberry Centre (TMC) Counsellors practice a form of counselling known as “Person Centred Counselling”. This is developed from the ideas of Dr Carl Rogers, an American psychologist working in the 1930’s and 40’s who based his ideas around the concept that the “client knows best” and that ultimately they will provide the mechanisms from which to move forward.

This form of counselling allows the client to bring to the session the issues and concerns that are most important to them at that time. The counsellor does not guide or advise but allows the client to realise their own capabilities in moving themselves and their situation forward.

Counselling does not mean advice. The Counsellor will help you look at options and work through issues but it is important to realise that any decisions or changes are decided and/or made by you and not the Counsellor.

Who are The Mulberry Centre Counsellors?
All our Counsellors are part or fully qualified to the standards laid down by either the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Our Counsellors give their time free of charge.

Where does the counselling take place?

In the Blue and Green Counselling Rooms here at The Mulberry Centre.
Confidentiality Anything discussed during a counselling session remains COMPLETELY confidential. It will not be discussed with anyone else, including other members of TMC’s team.

Counsellors are, however, required to attend personal supervision for every five hours of counselling undertaken. They may, therefore, discuss your case but your identity will be protected.

In addition, Counsellors are bound by their professional codes of conduct to report to the relevant authorities if they believe a child is endangered by the client or that a person is at risk of being killed or injured by the behaviour of the client.

Who can access counselling?
Cancer patients and their immediate carer are offered a course of six free sessions. Individuals can choose to have these sessions alone or with a partner.

How long will a session last?
Each session will take fifty minutes.

What happens at the end of the six sessions?
If you and your Counsellor feel that it would be useful for you to continue with counselling you will be given a list of organisations and local practitioners who will be able to help you further.

How do I book?
Appointments can be made either in person at The Mulberry Centre or by calling Sue Sullivan on 020 8321 6300.
